Bangladesh, one of the least developed countries in the world, is basically rural in nature. It lives in thousands of villages. Accrding to one estimate, number of village is 86,000 in all (GOB, 1997: 12). Agriculture is the mainstay of the Bangladesh economy, comprising 36 percent of GDP and employing about 80 percent of the labour force (Ali, 1956 : 217- 33). The method of cultivation has not yet been fully modern in the sense that scientific technology and such modern inputs as tractor, power tiller, chemical fertilizer, irrigation and high yielding variety seeds, pesticides are not adequately in use at all places in all seasons. To make the situation worse, the farm lands are highly fragmented, resulting in the smaller size of the holding and making it quite often unsuitable for modern method of cultivation. Acording to Khan, about 95 percent of all the farms are fragmented and well over half of these are split into six or more scattered plots (Khan, 1972: 41-42). In the report of the 1977 Land Occupancy Survey, it was stated that there were 11.8 million farm families for 18.1 million acres of farm land in Bangladesh. It revealed that 58.5 pecent of the households had the farm size of one acre or less and only 1.94 percent of households owned farms of 10 acres or more (GOB, 1997).
