When I was in High School I got myself involved in the struggle for the rights of the Bengali people in Pakistan. As I grew older my involvement increased because I began to understand the magnitude of exploitation of resource in East Pakistan which was used to develop West Pakistan. In 1963, I first visited Karachi, the then capital of Pakistan, and saw for myself the difference of development between Dhaka and Karachi. This visit opened my eyes wide, and I conclusively presumed that we, the Bengalis, have no future in Pakistan. Moreover, I did not see any similarity between the people of East and West Pakistan. Bengalis are distinctly different both culturally and socially. Therefore, I thought we must aspire for our own sovereign country because as Bengali we are a nation.
