Books on Intelligence and Intelligence Tests are coming up in the marke like mush-rooms because almost all examining bodies are using this type of test to size up the capabilities of candidates. But what is intelligence? Most of the psychologists and educationists think it to be certain problem-solving abilities of the examinee. But it is also an admitted fact that problem-solving abilities depend to a large extent on training and experience and by a process of teaching and learning, these problem-solving abilities can be developed and improved to a fairly large extent. This brings us to the conclusion that a measurement of the problem solving ability cannot be reaced upon as an original quality or capacity. The Standford-Binet test also brings us to the conclusion that the children, whose mother tongue is English, would do better for their chronological age than others of the same age if the latter's mother tongue of the same age was not English. In the Standford-Binet test of 1960, they have prepared a vocabulary list for testing boys of young ages, and the results showed that two types of children scored better than those of their chronological age— firstly those whose mother tongue was English, and secondly those whose mother tongue may not be English but they practised speaking English or lived in an environment where English was freely spoken.
