Muhammad Samad was born in 1956 in Jamalpur under the then Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. He started his educational life from a remote village. He got government scholarship of BD Taka 10.00 (current value in USD 0.12) at class five in 1967 that encouraged and expedited his further studies. He passed Secondary School and Higher Secondary Certificate Examinations in the first divisions in 1973 and 1975 respectively. He graduated with honors in 1978 and obtained master's degree in the first class in Social Work in 1979 from the University of Dhaka. He did his Ph. D on participation of the rural poor in development programs of government and NGOs in Bangladesh.
