Shahryar Iqbal comes from the village Khankandi of Madaripur District. He studied at Notre Dame College, Dhaka and obtained Masters degrees in History and International Relations from the University of Dhaka. He also studied at the American University of beirut for a Diploma in Public Administration. He is a Member of the Administrative Cadre of the Bangladesh Civil Service, holding the rank of Additional Secretary to the Government. At present posted as Director General Bangladesh Television, he was formerly Managing Director Bangladesh Film Development Corporation and Director General, Department of Food. He was also Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Birmingham, UK between 1988-91. He was Assistant private Secretary to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman till the great leaders' last day. Shahryar Iqbal is a Life Member of Bangla Academy, Bangladesh Itihash Parishad and Asiatic Society of Bangladesh. At present he is a Council Member of this Society. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and ireland.
