If poetry is something that can communicate to the mind directly, even before it is understood, then it should be least in need of an introduction. And to go to introduce a poet of the standing of Al Mahmud would not only be a challenging but to an extent also an audacious venture considering the poet's originality, creative depth and distinctive sensuousness. For the last forty years or so Al Mahmud's place as one of the leading poets of the country is unassailable. He is a Modernist with a difference. It cannot be denied that Modernism in Bengali poetry has sometimes amounted to superficial and meretricious experimentation and assumed profundity of scholarship and allusions. Al Mahmud is a Modernist with a perennial appeal because, his admirers say, he has his roots firmly struck in the soil. They say Al Mahmud's Modernism is not the "borrowed" kind and though a Modernist in thinking and philosophy he has been able to capture the native spirit more forcefully and authentically than many other poets. In form and technique Al Mahmud did not make any sharp break from tradition, nor did he carry out any experimentation for its own sake.
